“Back in 2012, I was a barback, and that is what kickstarted my whole career in the beverage department. Since then, I learned a lot not only about different kinds of products and how to serve the customer but also how to socialize with different customers daily,” said Dio.

The Basic Skills and Competencies Needed for Beverage Department

For Dio, there are several skills that a person has to have if they want to work in the Beverage Department, one of which is to have excellent bar skills and communication skills. Because when you work at a bar, you are in an open kitchen where everyone can see what you do from left to right.

A positive attitude, eagerness to learn new things, and excellent at facing many challenges are crucial. “You must adapt to these situations because you will never know who you’re dealing with when you’re at the bar. It can be a CEO of a multinational company, an influential person, or a public figure,” said Dio.

That is why you need to remember to never keep things personal and never stop learning. There is so much going on when you are working at the bar, so you must know how to maintain your emotions, especially when dealing with customers face-to-face.

Identifying Problems and Setting the Next Action Plan

It is not just fun and games when you work in an open bar. You will face different types of problems each and every day within your own team or between the customers. For example, disagreements between two opinions or when the customer complained to the bartender.

As a leader, you must know how to deal with problems inside or outside the team. No matter whose fault it is, a leader must always be objective with his decision. For Dio to identify the problem, you need to find where the roots are. After that, you need to have an open conversation with each side and find a solution that benefits all parties.

“You have to be an objective person. You can’t just jump to a conclusion when you only hear it from one angle. Then, it would be best to be calm and keep an open mind when handling a case. Because you work with human beings, who have their own mind and opinion, it is easy to break the barrier of sanity when the problem occurs.” in Dio’s perspective.

When a leader knows how to lead a team and find ways to handle problems, they also need to teach these problem-solving skills to their own team and make it a fixed culture.

So what is the future of the Beverage Team?

“I want to have a reputable Beverage Team and for us to be known as one of the coolest Beverage Teams in Indonesia, not only through competitions but also through our day-to-day work life,” said Dio.

What an incredible insight shared by our very own Beverage Strategist. So if you have the skills to concoct a good beverage and are interested in being a part of Dio’s or any other Trooper’s team?
